Live from Southsea Common in Portsmouth, Huw Edwards introduces coverage of the National Commemorative Event taking place to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

n the evening of 5 June 1944, thousands of allied servicemen were waiting courageously for the signal to launch. In the 24 hours that followed, the troops of D-Day achieved the unthinkable, pushing the boundaries of ingenuity, bravery and sacrifice. Eighty years later, as night falls, a reflective and poignant event will be held at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Bayeux. The Princess Royal, accompanied by Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, alongside actors, musicians and currently serving military, will help mark the memories of those who took part, to hear their voices and to honour those who never made it home.

Momil Kamil Kasaab takes over a boat in the Indian Ocean, slays the owner, and he, along with 7 heavily armed men, land on a beach in Mumbai, India. They subsequently form groups of two, and launch terrorist attacks on an unsuspecting city and its' residents. The first explosion takes place in a taxi-cab that was on its way to the airport, followed closely by numerous people getting killed in the Chatrapati Shivaji Terminal, as well as in Colaba, and two restaurants. Police, unprepared and taken by surprise, swing into action, and manage to arrest Kasaab, while numerous officers are killed trying to subdue his associates. The investigating officer starts to question an uncooperative and unrepentant suspect - who refuses to divulge any information - and believes that he is on a mission of Jihaad - while the victims and their families, many of them of the Muslim faith, attempt to deal with their respective losses.

The Molotovs kick things off in style with “Rebel Rebel,” followed by magical covers of “Heroes” (The Horrors), ‘Fascination’ (La Roux), “Let's Dance” (Jeanne Added), “Rock'n'Roll Suicide” (The Libertines), “Sound and Vision” (Anna Calvi), “Starman” (The Divine Comedy), and “The Man Who Sold the World” (Yasmine Hamdan): eight intense reinterpretations of David Bowie's work, delivered during an arty and decidedly London-esque stroll, which, from stage to studio, recreates the fragile intensity of a live performance.

This documentary will not only revere those heroes — some from a different land who gave their lives — but to remember those who were lucky enough to live through it all. It also is to honor those French residents of the first generation, who lost their lives in the Invasion and those who survived and carried on the spirit year after year. The second generation has been taught by their parents to never forget the sacrifices that were made. The veterans who visit Normandy over the years can attest to the hospitality of these caring and loving people.
